Hello all,

Yikes! Sorry for the delay in post, I was traveling with my mom and brother last week and haven't been able to get to a computer. Photos don't do the places and people justice. We were in Paracas (Nasca Lines, Sandborading), Cusco (Machu Picchu) and the Amazon.

PARACAS

Our trip began in Paracas, where we flew over the Nazca Lines. There are over 200 individual figures.
Pachumama (Symbol for mother earth)

The Nazca Lines can only be seen from the sky. They were thought either to have been created as a message for the gods (hence why the symbols can only be seen from the "heavens"); used as sacred ceremonial walks (many artifacts such as ceramic pieces and other materials used for offerings where found at the edges of the lines, but no human remains indicating that locals didn't live around/close to the lines); or are believed to relate to the constellations.

CUSCO

In Cusco we visited the cemetery. Death in Hispanic culture is much less solemn then in American culture. The people here believe that the soul and spirt continue to live and be present as long as they are remembered. Graves are decorated with objects and trinkets that the deceased loved in life (and use in death). In the shrine there is usually a glass of water. People are buried with very few clothes because it is thought that the dead must walk to heaven and retrieve any clothes that they may drop along the way, so both water and little clothing are necessary for the journey.

The market

We were in Cusco during Holy Week. There was a procession at night, where Jesus was carried through the streets and would leave red petals behind as a sign of his nobility.

We climbed to the Sun Gate, a good hour or so of uphill trekking. All worth it in the end through to catch a glimpse of the iconic view of Machu Picchu

  2. Awesome pictures! I love the ones of the kids. They're like the ones I took in Belize.
When are you coming back? I can't remember... I think I'm going to need a complete description of this whole experience, blow-by-blow that cannot possibly be typed it would be too long. I have so many questions I don't know where to begin! But I am curious, do you feel like you're making a difference?
